Priscila Asare Wears The Crown

Image
In the wee hours of Sunday 18th September, Miss Priscila Asare, a Level 300 Strategic Communication student of the African University College of Communication was crowned Miss Tourism Ghana 2011. I knew from the onset she will win because she has the experience and exposure in beauty pageants. On the ticket of Miss Eastern Region, Priscila won the Ms Personality at the grand finale of the Miss Ghana Beauty Pageant in 2009. She has done it again by winning the Ms Talent and Ms Personality in addition to the crown at the just ended pageant. Lol, you need to see this lady personaly in order to understand me. She is very social, jovial and makes friends easily. When she steps into the lecture hall, no matter your mood, Priscy will make you laugh. I just love the sight of this lady. Priscy, you deserved it, you went for it, and now you have it. Keep it up. Kudos, we love you.

Why I admire Nigerian Movies

Image
Olawale Rotimi My love for Nigerian movies stem from my exposure to the study of a book written by Ola Rotimi, titled 'The God's Are Not To Blame'. I studied this book as part of my literature requirements. Being a literature student in secondary school, I had to bi-sect and di-sect this book to really understand what the writer has for his audience. The usage of proverbs in the book makes me marvel at the reverence Nigerians give to proverbs. I could count over twenty proverbs in this book. No wonder Chinua Achebe wrote in his book 'Things Fall Apart' that "proverbs are the palm oil with which words are eaten" There is a saying in Igbo land that "when a proverb is used and explained to a man, that his mother's bride price was paid in vain." The mark of an elder in Igbo land is the ability to use proverbs dexterously in social conversations. A man who is not seasoned in the use of proverbs is seen as immature or foolish in talk. Proverbs a

BEAUTY IN THE SHOP

Image
Ayi Kwei Armah, a renowned Ghanaian writer, published a book in 1968 titled, 'The Beautiful Ones Are Not Yet Born'. Indeed, you can support this adage, but I want to assure you that the beautiful ones are born and are right here with us. You can find them in beauty shops, cosmetic shops, health SPAs, you name it. Gone are the days when a lady beholds herself in a mirror and turns away depressed and saddened. A lot of women have been depressed in one way or the other due to the structure of their legs, toe nails, buttocks size, breast size, finger nails, lips, eyes, texture and length of hair etc. No matter how ugly one appears, there are additives proffered by beauty therapists to enhance one's beauty. From the crown of one's head to the sole of one's feet items such us; artificial nails, lip gloss, facial powder, mascarra, artificial eye lashes, artificial eye pupil, artificial hair etc. can change a scarecrow into a perfect beauty queen. If you don't ag

WHAT DO YOU SEE?

Image
Hi my lovely readers, Being a member of the Word Miracle Church International is something I will always cherish because, the kind of food (word of God) that emanates from the pulpit makes me not want for food from any other source. Yesterday at the Headquarters, it was so marvelous as we had the General Secretary of the organization, who also happens to be the Senior Head Pastor of the Zoe Assembly at Mataheko, Bishop Hansel Agyei-Frimpong ministering to us. His message was titled ‘What do you see?’ Lol, you had to be there to see things for yourself. The man preaches with passion, every fibre of his being is always involved in his preaching. Taking his scripture reference from the book of Genesis 1:1-3, he assured us that God has given us the gift of sight or the ability to see, and that God doesn’t want us to see just with our optical eyes or physical eyes, but that God wants us to also see with the eyes of our spirit. i.e. “what we see directs our life”.   W hat we see is what we

Traditional or White

Nigerian actress Mercy Johnson on her traditonal marriage day Which is more colourful, a traditional or white wedding? Most Nigerians have come to appreciate the traditional marriage ceremony over the white or European wedding. Even though the latter is also carried out, but the traditional and cultural way of organising the traditional marriage is so colourful. Ghanaian fante woman during a traditional marriage ceremony In recent times, Ghanaians have also adapted using traditional clothes such as kente to add colour to the ocassion.  I believe the white or European marriage ceremony is just a secondary celebration to climax the customary or traditional marriage. Folks, which is the actual marriage? Is it the white or the traditional? Mercy during her white wedding ceremony Send your comments.

Don’t Draw Back Your Hand

Image
Once upon a time, a woman went into labour to bring forth twins. After travailing for some time, one of the babies brought out its hand. Immediately, the mid wife as a symbol of identification tied a scarlet cloth on the hand of the baby. Just after that, the baby drew back its hand into its mother’s womb. The mid wife could not explain this act as it appeared strange. All of a sudden, the second baby, without saying jack, gathered strength and jumped out of its mother’s womb with all vigor.  The mid wife cleaned the baby and wrapped it in a cloth and later saw the arrival of the one with the scarlet cloth tied around its hand. Folks, do you realize any lessons from this short story? Well let’s learn a few. Hand as used in this story symbolizes support. We often ask for ‘more hands’ when we need the support of others. In this sense, the story is telling us not to withdraw our support to others. You may be supporting a brother, sister, husband, wife, parent, or even a neighbour who

What Will You Be Remembered For?

Image
Hello my blog funs, I shared a thought on my facebook wall sometime ago, and want to throw more light on it to you. It goes like this “someone is 80 years old today and is not even remembered in his community, another person is dead 30 years ago and is celebrated as though he is still alive. What are you living for? Rise up, impact a life today because if you live for yourself alone, you will be remembered by yourself”. The renowned playwright, William Shakespear once said “all the world is a stage”. I strongly believe in this philosophy because we are mere actors and actresses performing various roles assigned by our director and producer (God). If we perform very well, we are loved and cherished by our audience (neighbours) and our director (God) will always look out to give us the lead role.  On the contrary, if our performance does not satisfy the expectations of the director, he ignores us whenever he has a special role to be performed. Ghanaians woke up on Tuesday 13th Septem

My First Day At School

Image
Come tomorrow September 13th, most public schools in Ghana will re-open for a new academic year. The day is usually so colourful as children of school-going age register for the first time or continue their education. Continuing pupils always look out for new shoes, socks, bags, uniforms etc. This practice has come to stay cos, it is believed that a new class should receive or welcome only new clothings. Woe unto any parent who buy these items without the child's consent. Even children as young as three years can identify a boy or girl's shoe or bag. Hitherto, a child of six years is asked by school authorities to cross-over his or her head with one hand to touch an ear, if the hand is able to touch the ear, that child is deemed fit to enrol into class one.  Newly enrolled school children are provided with paper-made caps with inscriptions such as 'my first day at school' boldly embossed on them. This is to warmly welcome such children to formal education. I quite

Train Up Osama in the way he should go.......

Image
Parents and guardians have been encouraged by the Bible to "Train up a child in the way he should go; and when he is old, he will not depart from it" (Proverbs 22:6). It is believed that the US's CIA trained Osama Bin Laden, the brain behind the September 11 attack on the World Trade Center in New York and the Pentagon in Arlinton,Virginia. Yesterday marked a decade of the suicide bombing that led about 2,974 souls into eternity. "God knows it did not cross our minds to attack the Towers , but after the situation became unbearable and we witnessed the injustice and tyranny of the American- Israeli alliance against our people in Palestine and Lebanon . I thought about it. And the events that affected me directly were that of 1982 and the events that followed when America allowed the Israelis to invade Lebanon, helped by the U.S. Sixth Fleet . As I watched the destroyed towers in Lebanon , it occurred to me punish the unjust the same way: to destroy towers in Am

MINISTERING TO TEENAGERS

Image
Hi my blog funs, my camp meeting is all over and I am so glad I was a part of that programme. In actual fact, I wish it never ended, no wonder my Naija teens hi-jacked my luggage insisting they won't let me leave. I thank God so much and always appreciate the fact that my life revolves around these teenagers. Some of our programmes included; Corporate devotion, where all hostel members worshiped and prayed together before the day's programme. Arise and shine was time for the morning aerobics and jogging where all Aunties and Uncles participated with the teenagers - I blogged some of these for you already. Our bible studies emphasized on the theme "Salt and Light" which saw Bible figures like Joseph, whose sale into slavery in Egypt though seemed barbaric, but was God's own way of preparing him to be used as a preservative in the life of his family - just as salt is used to preserve food from decay. We also had our platoon meetings, this programme saw the teenag
